HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech women’s basketball squad has a lot to play for heading back on the road this weekend with vital matchups downstate at Wayne State (5:30 p.m.) and Saginaw Valley State (1 p.m.).

About the Warriors
Wayne State enters the week residing in a tie for third in the GLIAC standings with Northern Michigan having played to an 8-4 record in the league. Overall, the Warriors are 13-7 while going 8-4 at the Wayne State Fieldhouse currently on a four game win-streak.
Wayne State sees four players average double-digit scoring led by Taylor Thompson (12.9). Shea Tripp (12.3), McKenna Ferguson (12.4) and Gabi Lutchka (10.3) rounded out the top-scorers.
Thompson is the GLIAC’s top offensive rebounder ranking 31st in the country with 3.6 offensive boards per game. She is the team’s top-rebounder with 8.8 boards per game with Tripp adding 7.5 per outing. The duo also average over 1.75 steals per game led by Tripp (2.25). Tripp finds success on offense as the team’s top-facilitator with 3.9 assists per game which paces the league.
About the Cardinals
Saginaw Valley State sits right behind the Huskies in the GLIAC standings with a conference ledger of 5-7 while going 11-9 for the season. The Cardinals have played to a 5-5 record over their last 10 games with quality wins over Northern Michigan (67-51) on Jan. 18, Roosevelt (80-64) on Jan. 25 and most recently bested Purdue Northwest (71-47) on the road last Saturday.
The Cardinals have the third-best scoring defense in the league (61.9) and have the third-best shot blocker in the league with Ava Locklear who produces 1.2 blocks per game. SVSU also accounts for 11.2 steals per game, also third in the GLIAC as Lydia Meredith (2.70), Saniaa Walker (2.15) and Aleshia Jones (2.05) are among the top-seven in steals and steals per game in the GLIAC this season.
Offensively, Saginaw Valley State sees Megan McCalla pace the league with 17.2 points per game with Jones close residing third in the conference adding 14.3 points a game.
Meredith is the team’s top facilitator, with 65 assists this season for an average of 3.3 per game. Locklear controls the glass for the Cardinals with 6.2 rebounds per outing.
About the Huskies
Michigan Tech sits in sixth in the GLIAC with a 6-6 conference record while going 9-11 overall for the season. The Huskies are 5-5 over their last 10 games including a series sweep over Davenport and the first GLIAC weekend sweep of the season with wins over Saginaw Valley State (84-46) and Wayne State (76-67) back at the SDC Gymnasium on Jan. 16th & 18th.
The Huskies rank second in the league in shooting percentage (43.3%) while producing 68.5 points per game, led by veteran guard Isabella Lenz (14.1). First-year guard Kendall Standfest (11.4) and graduate transfer Janie Tormanen (11.2) join Lenz in double-digit scoring.
Alyssa Wypych and Maja Kozlowska are also key pieces to the Huskies offense, adding 9.1 and 9.3 points, respectively. Lenz and Dani Nuest are the team’s top distributors, averaging 3.1 assists per outing.
Michigan Tech resides third in the GLIAC in defensive rebounds (29) with Standfest (6.4) and Tormanen (4.4) leading the way. The duo average 7.5 and 6.4 rebounds, respectively.
One Last Thing
For the season the Huskies average 68.5 points per game but when scoring 70 or more points, the Black & Gold are 8-1 on the year.
