Local businesses brace for impact of U.S.-China tariffs
REENA ROY, ABC NEWS, NEW YORK. EVEN THOUGH TARIFFS ON CANADA AND MEXICO ARE NOW PAUSED, THE INCREASED TAXES ON CHINESE IMPORTS MEANS AMERICANS COULD STILL PAY MORE FOR ITEMS THAT YOU USE EVERY DAY. OUR JOSSIE CARBONARE SPOKE WITH BUSINESS OWNERS IN WELLINGTON ABOUT HOW THESE TARIFFS IMPACT THEIR BUSINESS, AND CUSTOMERS DIRECTLY. IT’S A TRICKLE DOWN EFFECT IMPACTING LOCAL BUSINESS OWNERS AND POSSIBLY EVEN THE COUNTY. A SPOKESPERSON WITH PALM BEACH COUNTY TELLS ME THEY WILL BE ASSESSING WHAT THEIR IMPACTS ARE AS THEY PURCHASE FUTURE GOODS. AS OF TODAY, HOWEVER, CONTRACTS REMAIN IN PLACE FOR THE PRICING OF GOODS, MEANING THE PRICING OF MATERIALS THEY GET FOR COUNTY CONSTRUCTION, FOR EXAMPLE, HAS A SET PRICE. THE COUNTY ALSO HAS A BUY AMERICAN WHEN POSSIBLE IN THE CLAUSE OF ITS CONTRACT. MANY PEOPLE ARE STILL WAITING TO SEE WHAT THE IMPACTS WILL BE EXACTLY, BUT LOCAL BUSINESS OWNERS WE SPOKE WITH SHARE THEY’LL LIKELY HAVE TO PAY HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS MORE IN CERTAIN GOODS, AND WILL HAVE TO RAISE PRICES FOR CUSTOMERS AS A RESULT OF US-CHINA TARIFFS, THERE’S STILL NO WORD ON JUST HOW LONG THIS IS ALL EXPECTED TO LAST.
