SANDUSKY, Ohio (WTVG) – State inspectors gave Cedar Point’s Top Thrill 2 the green light for launch on opening day.
A spokesperson for the Ohio Department of Agriculture, the agency responsible for inspecting rides, said an inspection for Top Thrill 2 was still underway into Friday evening and was unable to confirm at the time whether it’d be ready for Saturday. An update shared at 10 a.m. Saturday said the inspection is now finished and the ride received its permit to operate.
The ODA spokesperson said Cedar Point released Top Thrill 2 to ODA for inspection on Monday. ODA said Tuesday morning its team had begun inspecting the ride.
“Every roller coaster is unique and requires reviewing thousands of feet of track along with carts, speed, electrical aspects, signage, and more,” the spokesperson said Friday. “We share in riders’ excitement for opening day, however ride safety is our priority and we are unable to confirm at this time if the ride will open tomorrow.”
The ride was closed indefinitely just weeks after opening in 2024.
The original Top Thrill Dragster was closed after a metal object flew off the roller coaster back in 2021, leaving a woman in critical condition with a brain injury.
